Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Earn Sentimental Victory Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed through the stadium as Nottingham Forest supporters celebrated a further result against their Swedish opponents. Much has transpired since Francis's winning header secured the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those glorious moments. Equally, significant shifts have taken place in the five weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest appearing refreshed and earning a convincing victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the Europa League.

Gaining Steam with Another Consecutive Victory

For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after ending sixth in their domestic league – represented a third straight triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum generated from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of the club's European Cup triumph in spirit, the game itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or jitters.

This was an occasion filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from that time were also in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the pitch 15 minutes before the start, and a characteristically impressive display was unveiled in the home stand.

Recalling the Past

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed one part of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the squads came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display depicted Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort wide inside two minutes and established a 2-0 advantage by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence captained by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.

Second Strike Seals Control

The scorer was implicated in the team's next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off the defender Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header smartly repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Struggles

This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to equal the home team's energy. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.

Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the side that stunned Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three goals, though he called on substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Smooth Night for Forest

It turned out to be a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the game already boxed off and later introduced 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. He discussed the club legends providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, as well.
