Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
