The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming seems especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
