Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a rosy sludge that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a section of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A like substance has also been documented on sections of another local beach and an additional coastal site.
Examples have been gathered and sent to the regulatory body for testing. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to changes in minerals, heat, rain or sunlight".
"The events are sometimes called reddish tides because the blooms can turn the water reddish," the official said. "Not all algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds acting as a major source of food for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The primary reason of red tides in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their rate has grown in the past few years, partly due to climate change and pollution that join together to create mineral-filled seas geared for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their colonies that interferes with the proper operation of aquatic systems.
These occurrences have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as marine life is eliminated or smothered, providing more food for the outbreak.
A southern state not long ago dealt with a devastating phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a string of sea temperature spikes, which extended across an extensive zone. The bloom left surfers with sore eyes and persistent coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the onset of South Australia's algal bloom said, based on photos of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There have been lots of these blooms around Tassie of late," she added.
Coleman stated the algae did not create poisons comparable to the species involved in the previous devastating outbreak, but it does eat microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"Typically one notices a bloom of sea sparkle after a proliferation of another organism, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it looked like the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, pointing to similar cases elsewhere.
"So the state needs to send a firm alert here, the officials and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the people here," she stated.
Henley expressed she had concerns for public safety after noticing a tingling sensation along her body while being sprayed with affected seawater.
An advocacy organization has documented deceased sea creatures and expired organisms appearing on the coast, with a veteran activist calling the circumstances as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the local leader to inspect and "take control the response that authorities must be undertaking".
"He needs to realize this is a crisis in the making, commercially as well as for nature."
Addressing the media, the official said he was did not know of any links between the event and the farming business, saying expert examination was necessary before determinations could be drawn.
"We must make certain our waterways are safe for nature and long-lasting," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across Tasmania are our treasures and we need to guarantee the people and our economy can operate side-by-side to utilize our waterways efficiently and in a lasting way."
