Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
